The Ellen DeGeneres, JCPenney Affair Shows the World is Getting Better

Here’s the deal in a nutshell: JCPenney recently announced the hiring of popular talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres as a spokesperson. Nothing unusual there, companies often hire spokespersons.

Or nothing unusual unless you’d consider it different because DeGeneres is a lesbian. If so that is only because gays and lesbians have for centuries not been given equal opportunities on our planet. So hiring her in such a high-profile role is different because historically companies, even were they not homophobic, were afraid to lose customers who may have been, well, small-minded.

But other than that, routine. DeGeneres is not just a celebrity, she is an unarguably outstanding human being, extremely intelligent, loads of integrity and a proverbial heart of gold. So she’s smart, trustworthy and honest and she cares about people. Perfect choice.

One Million Mean Moms
But then enter One Million Moms, an organization that, well, that has a lot of unkind, small-minded and not-too-bright dinosaurs in it. Presumably they’re Moms, but we can be certain they do not speak for the vast majority of Moms in North America, or anywhere (they actually have only about 40,000 members). They said nasty things about Ellen because of her sexual orientation and demanded JCPenney reverse its decision.

One Million (Mean) Moms adding their opinion into the fray was a wonderful thing because it gives us the chance to see how much our world is changing. JCPenney could have been cowed and dropped DeGeneres, that sort of thing has occurred with great frequency, but instead they confirmed DeGeneres, and CEO Ron Johnson did it in no uncertain terms.

“We stand squarely behind Ellen as our spokesperson and that’s a great thing, because she shares the same values that we do in our company,” Johnson said. “We think Ellen represents the values of our company and the values that we share.” The CEO went on to say that DeGeneres is “a very honest, straightforward person with extraordinary values.”

More than one million Moms, and Dads
But that wasn’t all. Conservative TV talk show host, Bill O’Reilly, from Fox News, the place Sarah Palin often works, supported DeGeneres. And Moms supported her, not just by watching her heart-warming talk show, but by joining with others to create a Facebook group called ’1 Million People who Support Ellen for J.C. Penney.’ Within two days that group had over twice the supporters One Million Moms has.
Events such as this help us to see – help others on the cusp to see – there is no need to be small and afraid. They help people who normally would listen to a Sarah Palin’s prejudiced opinionating instead get to see a Bill O’Reilly embrace the change in the world and show his humanity, allowing them to connect to the notion of doing the same thing.

None of these good things would have happened were it not for One Million Unenlightened Moms, without them we would not have gotten to see and experience how much for the better the world really can, and does, change. And how much for the better it has changed.

Miley Cyrus Sings Bob Dylan Tune on Ellen

Miley Cyrus visited The Ellen DeGeneres Show and filmed a clip while singing Bob Dylan’s song “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go.” Her visit with the talk show host will air on Tuesday.

According to a report from Hollywood Life, Miley and Ellen DeGeneres dished about the song, and chatted about her new album and even her boyfriend Liam Hemsworth, too.

Miley has had quite the full schedule lately—between spending time with Liam, filming and promoting her upcoming film LOL, and recording music for Amnesty International, the album on which her Bob Dylan cover will appear.

Now she’s appearing on Ellen DeGeneres’s show and talking about her crazy life and fulfilling career.

You can check out a preview of Miley’s visit with Ellen by clicking here. Hear Ellen call Bob Dylan ‘one of the greatest singers of all time,’ as she introduces Miley. In all honesty, it really is one of the best songs Miley Cyrus has recorded since her hit song The Climb. But judge for yourself when you watch the video clip.

“I’m so excited to be on this record,” Miley Cyrus tells Ellen DeGeneres following her performance, noting the worthy cause it will benefit.

Are you a Miley Cyrus fan? Even if you’re not, you must admit that this is the kind of song she is meant to be singing. She has her dad Billy Ray Cyrus’s knack for making country music flow from her vocal cords like incredibly smooth silk.

What did you think of the song? Would you buy the album that benefits Amnesty International?

Miley Cyrus To Appear on Ellen In February

Miley Cyrus will be stopping by The Ellen DeGeneres Show in February. She, along with rest of the singers who worked on the 50th Anniversary of Amnesty International album Chimes of Freedom that features nothing but Bob Dylan covers. Along with Miley stopping by for sweeps, we will also get to hear from the judges from The Voice, Jennifer Lopez, Taylor Swift and Zac Efron. All of these stars, plus more will provide an action packed show all throughout February.

I am glad to hear that Miley will be stopping by to perform, and maybe we can even hope for a mini interview? She hardly ever does them anymore and I am sure she has a lot to promote. With her upcoming movie, and her tour last year she certainly has a lot to say. I can understand why she might be weary of doing it, but we all know that she is being watched and she should be able to state something to defend herself.

Are you excited for sweeps next month? I think it could make for an interesting month, and I am sure Miley’s fans are eager to see her again. It will be fun to see how she covers Bob Dylan. She did pretty good on her Nirvana cover, but I know that Bob does have a certain style. I doubt it will be as good, but it will be fun to find out exactly what she did do to make it her own.
